The MK46 MOD 0 is the version of the M249 developed to meet U.S. Special Operations Forces requirements for a lightweight variant that would retain the intrinsic functionality and reliability of the standard model. A major weight reduction was achieved by designing a new lightweight fluted barrel, removing the carrying handle, magazine well and vehicle mounting lugs. Unique to the MK46 MOD 0 is the M1913 multi-rail system that accommodates scopes, laser designators and tactical lights. It also has a detachable bipod and includes one spare barrel.

The spade-grip, pintle-mounted M240 D was developed for use in military helicopters. Its smooth swing, neutral balance and shorter length make it ideal for vehicle and naval craft mounts. An optional egress kit enables the use of the coaxial or pintle-mounted M240 as a ground role machine gun for self-defense by dismounted vehicle crew members. FN Herstal has been awarded a sole-source U.S. Navy contract to produce the M3M .50 caliber machine guns under the GAU-21 designation for Navy and Marine Corps rotary-wing assault aircraft. The contract award followed a qualitative assessment to gauge the effectiveness of the M3M for Marine Corps use. Marine Corps Warfighting Lab (MCWL) and Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One conducted the evaluation. The GAU-21 will be compatible for mounts on board Boeing [BA] CH-46 helicopters, Sikorsky [UTX] CH-53s and H-60 helicopters, Bell Helicopter Textron [TXT] UH-1 helicopters and the MV-22 tiltrotor produced by a Bell-Boeing team.
